Literacy Tidbits
Free digital flashcards & more for ESL/ABE learners
This site is designed to support the literacy needs of English as a Second Language (ESL) and Adult Basic Language (ABE) learners. It can be used with a tutor to supplement face-to-face and online instruction. It can also be used to informally assess current literacy levels and as a post-instruction informal assessment tool. Learners can also use the site on their own to test their knowledge and as a homework tool.
The site has components to support reading, listening, speaking, and writing. It can be used on a computer and mobile devices. Learners who move can continue to use the site anywhere in the world. This site is actively growing and maintained. It is not designed to take the place of a larger set of instructional materials that tutors may use. It is not meant to take the place of commercially-prepared instructional materials.
MODULE COMPONENTS
Vocabulary Flashcards: Each module has a set of digital flashcards with a set of related vocabulary words built around a central theme. Learners can look at pictures, read the words, and listen to the word pronunciation. They can work with the tutor and later review on their own, testing their pronunciation before listening to the spoken word.
Vocabulary Sentences Flashcards: These flashcards contain the same vocabulary words inserted into a sentence. This helps to provide context and often includes several other related words. Tutors can help learners read the sentences, repeat them, and check for understanding. Learners can also practice sentences independently outside of the tutoring session.
Vocabulary No Words Flashcards: These flashcards contain pictures and the clickable links to the audio only. Learners can test their recall of each word and check the audio link for accuracy.
Conversation Starters Flashcards: These flashcards contain written dialogue between people using the related vocabulary word in context. Learners can practice the conversations with their tutors and review independently. They can also use the cards as a launch point to initiate a longer conversation in oral and written formats.
Other: Some modules also contain self-grading quizzes or links to games and other related learning activities.
